Who We Are
The work of the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center is supported and overseen by two organizations. They are:
The Tourism Development Authority or TDA is a 5-member board appointed by the Alleghany Board of County Commissioners and is responsible to administer the county's occupancy or lodging tax. The occupancy tax is collected for overnight accommodations at motels and hotels, bread and breakfast inns and vacation rental cabins, homes and condos. By law 2/3s of the occupancy tax must be spent on direct marketing of the county to potential visitors. The TDA assists in funding the operation of the Visitors Center and provides marketing funds through a grant process.
The Alleghany Chamber of Commerce is composed of member businesses, organizations and individuals. It is overseen by a 13-member board elected by the membership. The Chamber is committed to the idea that working together we can make good things happen. It works to improve local commerce and create a better community. Funding is provided by member dues, a Town of Sparta appropriation and fundraising.
