Sketch of downtown SpartaLocated at the crossroads of the county's two main corridors -- US 21 and NC 18 -- Sparta is the physical center as well as the focus of community life for Alleghany County. Like many southern towns, the Courthouse is the center of town. The old central business district recalls the charm of the town's early history. Two shopping centers speak more to recent growth.

With a variety of motels, bed and breakfast inns and vacation rental properties in and around Sparta, NC, and the Blue Ridge Mountains as a backdrop, the area offers the traveler a welcome respite from the hectic pace of modern life.

The present Courthouse was constructed in 1910 and is listed in the National Register of historic buildings. Noteworthy businesses include: Farmer's Hardware, across from the Courthouse, opened in 1936. R. Amos Wagoner, Sr. bought into the business in 1937 and it remains in the Wagoner family today. The Alleghany News, which traces its history to The Alleghany Star, established in 1889 by A.S. Carson.

The town also features one of the most complete public parks for a community of its size, Crouse Park, located just two blocks north of the Courthouse. It offers extensive play equipment for youngsters, covered picnic pavilions, a performance stage, basketball and volleyball courts, a walking loop and a skateboard park. Sparta’s first mayor, Floyd Crouse (1892-1969), bequeathed his home and the surrounding property for the facility. Information about the Park and reservation procedures for facilities are available through the Sparta Town Office, 336-372-4257.

Alleghany County was created from land carved out of what was primarily Ashe County in 1859. James H. Parks, who was an early businessman whose store once stood west of the Courthouse, was one of three men who donated land for the county seat in 1866 and is credited with suggesting naming the town after the Greek city-state.

Sparta Is home to the county’s oldest manufacturer, Sparta Industries. Begun as D&P Pipe works in 1943, it produces Dr. Grabow pipes. Other manufacturers in Sparta include NAPCO, Parkdale-Magnolia and Martin-Marietta Composites.

While in town, be sure to stop by the Chamber of Commerce and Visitors’ Center at 58 South Main Street. We are located in the rock building with the green awning across from the Farmers Hardware parking lot.
