Go to the links above to view dated Events by Month or the calendar of local Meetings. Alleghany Jubilee: 25 North Main Street in downtown Sparta. Tuesday night features bluegrass music from the Rise and Shine Band, 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday night features a different band each week 8 to 11 p.m. Come to dance or just to listen. Admission $4 for adults, children under 12 free. Concessions available. Located on Main Street in the old Spartan Theater across from the Alleghany Courthouse. Call 336-372-4591 for more information. Blue Ridge Music Center: Located on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Mile Post 213, outdoor amphitheater and indoor interpretive center. Weekly concerts, usually on Saturday, free or nominal admission charge, June to mid-October. 276/236-5309 website. Crouse House Pickers: Whether to play or just to listen you can participate in a 20-year musical tradition at the Crouse House in Sparta every Monday night beginning at 6 p.m. Bluegrass and traditional musicians gather to jam. No two Monday night bands are the same but the music is always good. No admission but donations are accepted to defray expenses. The Crouse House is located two blocks north (behind) the Alleghany Courthouse at the corner of Grayson and Cherry streets. View musician photos from a recent jam. Farmers' Market: Eat fresh, buy locally grown produce and other handmade items from the Alleghany Farmers' Market, each Saturday through September 20, 8a to 12noon. Located on US 21, .1 mile north of the Courthouse in the paved area between the Alleghany Library and Sparta United Methodist Church. Mountaintop Cruisers: Owners of antique and unusual vehicles are invited to gather the first Saturday of each month, May through September, in Farmers Hardware parking lot in Sparta at 4 p.m. for fellowship and mutual admiration of their rolling stock. Open to all old-car fans and their vehicles. Call 336-372-4730 for information. Rescue Squad BBQ Chicken and Pork: The Alleghany Rescue Squad will sell barbecue whole and half chickens and chopped pork the first Saturday of the month April through September at the Squad building, 61 Trojan Ave. It goes fast, so be sure to stop by between 9a and 11a. Silver Dollar Music Park: Live music almost every Saturday (and some other days of the week). See their website for schedule and performing bands. Take US 21 5 miles south of Sparta or 2 miles north of the Blue Ridge Parkway intersection. Turn at the sign onto Glade Valley Road. Immediately bear to the left onto Glade Valley Church Road. Stations Inn: Free live music Sundays, May through October, 2-5 p.m., at the area's only motorcycle resort in Laurel Springs. VFW Chicken Barbecue: The VFW sells chicken BBQ (whole and half chickens) the second and fourth Saturday of the month May through September. The chicken goes fast. Be at the VFW Post, 1193 US 21 South, between 8:30 and 10:30a to assume that you get chicken. |
