Alleghany County was established in 1858-59. The early settlers were chiefly of English, Scotch-Irish, and French descent. The permanent population of Alleghany County is listed at 8,341, and of this about 97 per cent are native white and 3 per cent colored. The summer population swells this figure to at least double.

Alleghany County, Sparta, and Roaring Gap are becoming more and more popular as locations for the building of summer homes. Land can be purchased at reasonable prices and the construction is easy through local contractors. Many prefer homes of the native rock. Industry is welcomed in Alleghany County. Its tax rate is one of the lowest in North Carolina and electricity is available through Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation. In Sparta at present, is found a thriving manufacturer of shirts and work clothes, and the largest smoking pipe factory in the south is located here. One of the best High Schools in the northwest section of North Carolina is at Sparta, and last year a new 20-bed hospital was opened. This hospital is modern in every respect, with Dr. T. V. Willis as Medical Director and Ralph Evans as administrator.

All leading Protestant denominations have well established churches in Sparta. There are a number of active Civic clubs including the Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Wildlife Club, V. F. W., American Legion, and Woman's Club.
