The Cast

Betsey McRae (Truvy) is Marketing Coordinator for Pioneer Eclipse and owner/artist of home-based craft business bybetseyann. Betsey appeared in ACT's All My Sons last summer, and assists with publicity for all ACT productions. Her many stage credits from Theatre Macon (Georgia) include a previous appearance as Truvy in Steel Magnolias, as well as roles in Chicago, Jake's Women, Rainey, and Assistant Stage Manager for Annie. Betsey has also performed with the Lynchburg, VA Fine Arts Center. Betsey is happily married, with four (at last count) cats.

Kari Johnson (Annelle) is a native of Alleghany County, making her ACT stage debut. Her parents are Carol Greene of Ennice and Chris Walker of Cherry Lane. Kari resides in Laurel Springs with her husband, Mark, and is employed by High Country Medicine as a Medical Assistant. She is an active member of Pine Fork Baptist Church, where she has participated in many seasonal plays. Kari enjoys picture cropping, four wheeling, and spending time with her younger sister Laura.

Marion Adams (Clairee), an Alleghany native, previously graced the ACT stage as a singing nun in The Sound of Music. Marion is the organist at the United Methodist Church, where she also serves as director of the pre-school, and is active in the Lion's Club and a member of the Board of Alleghany Cares. You can catch Marion singing with the Highland Camarata. Marion is married to Ed Adams.

Susan Q. Landreth (Shelby) has moved out in front of the footlights to make her acting debut, having served as Assistant Director and Technical Director for ACT's production of Nuptials earlier this year. Susan is originally from Delaware, and has been an Alleghany resident for 14 years. She says she really enjoys working with such talented, hard-working people.

Sandra Lee (M'Lynn) lives in West Jefferson and is employed by New River Behavioral Health Care. She is a charter member of Ashe County Little Theatre (est. 1971), and has appeared in numerous productions, including The Cemetery Club, The Odd Couple (female version), Curious Savage, Arsenic and Old Lace, and as Oiuser in Steel Magnolias. Sandra has also served as producer for such shows as Dearly Departed, Lend Me A Tenor, Oliver, and Macbeth among others. Sandra is pleased to have this opportunity to perform with ACT.

Paula Joines (Ouiser) is employed in a variety of roles for the Alleghany County Schools Preschool program. She was last seen onstage in the role of Mrs. Carpenter in Nuptials, and Kate Keller in All My Sons. She has served as Director for You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown and Where the Lilies Bloom, and is slated to direct the next ACT production, The Fantasticks, this summer. Paula is currently 2nd Vice-President of ACT. Holding an AFA degree in drama, Paula's previous stage credits include performances in Hot l Baltimore, Marat / Sade and Carousel at Wilkes Community College. Alleghany Community Theatre roles as Annie Nations in Foxfire and Barbara Allen in Dark of the Moon are among her favorites. Paula's most loved role however is as "Mom" to Kelaiya, Justin and Jordan as well as "Nana" to Austin, Lucy and Katelyn.

A Note from the Director ~

I asked the ACT board if I could direct Steel Magnolias because I believe it says something important about women. Underneath the gorgeous hair-do's, the lipstick, powder and rouge lies the steel that keeps our society functioning. The women of Steel Magnolias prevail over grief and heartbreak by relying on their friendship, humor, and yes, a new hair-do or piece of jewelry helps too.

I want to thank the six women, all Steel Magnolias in real life, who have been such a joy to work with. I would like to dedicate this play to the Steel Magnolias to whom I owe so much: my Mother, Mildred Land Jenkins, and my Wife, Betty Greene Jenkins.

Sit back, and enjoy the show.
